KS4 Curriculum

At the Co-op Academy Priesthorpe we provide an enjoyable, varied and exciting curriculum that equips students with the skills, knowledge, understanding and exceptional outcomes they need to make a success of their lives. We continually evaluate and adapt what we offer to ensure it is coherent, high quality and provides inclusive opportunities for all with the thread of the co-operative values and principles running through it.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure all of our students:

  • are successful regardless of age, gender, ability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or economic circumstances
  • have high aspirations and know how they can achieve them
  • know how to learn successfully, and keep themselves safe and healthy
  • develop functional skills including reading, writing, oracy and numeracy
  • develop knowledge and cultural capital to understand, engage with and influence the world around them
  • are community minded with a willingness to involve themselves and volunteer
  • have had the opportunity to engage with employees and members of the Co-op to assist in their preparation for work and later education and employment choices in life
  • are successful in entering the world of training, education or employment equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, resilience, confidence and self-esteem to succeed as active members of society

The aims of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 are fully covered in Year 7 and 8. The breadth and depth of coverage ensures firm foundations for strong progress and attainment, evident in our improving outcomes for all learners. This has enabled us to extend Key Stage 4 to three years. Students begin option choices in Year 9 to ensure:

  • breadth within the curriculum. Students are able to study 4 option choices. This maintains a broad balance of subjects for individual students and increases opportunities for students to study Ebacc subjects. As a result, Arts subjects also remain very popular choices at Key Stage 4.
  • depth of coverage. The model of delivery ensures sufficient time to fully cover the detail of specification content and maximise opportunities to secure the highest grades;
  • high levels of engagement. Student voice and Engagement in Learning data indicate high levels of motivation when students have an earlier degree of control over their programme of study.

In Year 9, options are delivered with a strong focus around skills development and gaining a wider understanding of the subject. This may take the form of projects. This style of delivery aims to develop a love of learning of each subject and provide opportunities to further develop cultural capital. In the majority of subjects, the delivery of GCSE content is delayed until HT3 in Year 9.

All students follow a programme of study, which includes:

  • Maths • Physical education
  • English • Religious studies
  • Science

Separate sciences are delivered to all students from Year 9. The opportunity to take triple science is open to all. During YR10, assessments inform key decisions around who should progress into YR11 onto triple and who should consolidate learning and focus on securing the best possible grades on the Trilogy course.

In addition, students select 4 options from the following:

  • History • Geography
  • French • Spanish
  • Business • Art
  • Drama • Food
  • Construction • Engineering
  • Computing • Media
  • Religious Education • Child Development
  • Health & Social Care • Statistics and Further Maths
  • Sociology • PE
  • Sport Studies • Dance

All students must include either History or Geography as part of their choices. Individual meetings with staff support every student in identifying the best personal option courses which will support their career aspirations and offer them the most opportunities for success as individuals.
